Investment emeralds

To invest in emeralds, one must understand their uniqueness and value.

Investing in emeralds

There are emeralds for jewelry, then emeralds for luxury and investment jewelry, and then there are exceptional investment pieces that often spend most of their lives alone in sealed vaults and their owner really only shows them off on special occasions!

Nothing beats the feeling of having a unique gem that will be passed down for generations, and is guaranteed to be worth investing in! Plus, it will "tell" your personal (original) story.

Unique gemstone

There are no two identical stones in the world. Each has inclusions, admixtures or blemishes. An emerald without a blemish de facto does not exist and its occurrence is borderline miraculous. It is these blemishes, however, that make emeralds unique. At the very top of the emerald quality ladder are stones from Colombia. They are mined in the province of Boyacá, and real experts can even identify which mining site a particular stone comes from. These emeralds are dark colored but clear, with a magical play of light.

The quality and price of emeralds is determined by more factors than the 4C diamond scale indicates. The eight parameters that are tracked for emeralds determine the price of the stone, and historical development lends credence to this system, with the set price steadily increasing over time. The proof is in the lists of emeralds auctioned at Christie's and Sotheby's, whose prices break all records.

Just as every person is unique, so is every emerald.

The price of Colombian emeralds is steadily rising.
How much do emeralds cost?

According to the international company GEMVAL (Gemstone Price Guide, gemval.com), the price of the finest emeralds in the over one carat category increased by 160% in the 5 years before the start of the Covid-19 pandemic! During the Covid-19 pandemic, the acceleration in the price of Colombian emeralds accelerated even more.

International PIAT (piat.com) examined the price trend of Colombian emeralds at major auctions over a 15-year period. The graph above shows a remarkable increase in price: around 10% per year. For the five highest-quality lots, the increase was even more pronounced, around 15% per year.

Emerald price per carat: How much does the weight of the emerald play a role in the price?

The weight of the stone measured in carats plays an important role in the valuation of natural emeralds, with larger stones being rarer and therefore more expensive. However, the weight of a gemstone is not the main factor that influences its actual price.

The price of an emerald per carat is based on other key factors that affect its overall value. The most significant aspect is the quality of the stone, especially its color, clarity and cut. Emeralds with deep, rich green color and minimal inclusions that interfere with their clarity fetch the highest prices. Another important factor is the origin of the emerald - Colombian emeralds in particular are highly valued for their exceptional quality.
